Lean Six Sigma (LSS) has been a case study on how to successfully rebrand and make famous, existing process improvement techniques. LSS is the conglomeration of Lean Manufacturing, Statistical Process Control, Deming’s Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, and some project management. LSS was made famous in the business world in the ‘90’s by Jack Welch, the CEO of General Electric. PM’s, BA’s, and other professionals can take advantage of the brand recognition in the market, as well as the methodology, by getting certified as green or black belts.
The business world is composed of on-going operations. These operations are composed of processes. These processes need to improve and evolve over time in order to meet changing demands and technologies. LSS is the premier choice and the most legitimate methodology to improve processes.
PM’s and BA’s can improve project results and customer satisfaction by using LSS. Many of the failure points of projects can be avoided by using LSS. Take for instance customer expectations. With LSS customer critical to quality metrics are identified and data collected. This baseline serves as an objective measure comparing pre and post project conditions. This discipline ensures customers see the improvements.
Lastly, having the entire project team use LSS ensures a common language and methodology, bringing disparate team members together as nothing else can.
